Weatherproofing Your Deck

South Texas summer is here, and it's in full force! That hot Texas sun can wreak havoc on many parts of your home--your paint, your roof, your yard and landscaping....but have you given any thought to what it may be doing to your deck as well?

First, make sure to keep your deck clear of debris like branches, leaves, and dirt. Keeping your deck space clean will prevent the spread of rot from this debris to your wood. Rotting prevention is the first step in ensuring longevity of your deck.

Second, ensure you keep your deck clean--meaning it should be scrubbed at least once a month with water and a cleaning solution. A deck free of debris and dirt is one that will stay in good condition.

Finally, use a sealer! All decks, especially those in Texas, should be finished, meaning they have a sealing coat to preserve the wood. This can be a clear sealant or even a stain to give a cleaner, updated appearance.
