Learn With Alamo Handyman: Gutter Cleaning

The purpose of your home’s gutters is to keep your house safe from water. Gutters direct rain water away from your house, so it does not seem down into your foundation, which can cause long-terms damage and costly repairs.

By keeping your gutters clean, you are keeping your home in optimal shape. While gutters generally require minimal maintenance, one important task when you own a home is to keep your gutters clean of leaves and other debris. This will help protect your home, and will also ensure your gutters last for the longest possible time.

If you experience any mobility challenges, Alamo Handyman recommends your contact a professional to complete this job. Cleaning gutters requires extensive time on ladders and on your feet, and will require you to move a sturdy ladder around the entire perimeter of your house.

Supplies Needed

  • A person to assist/hold your ladder

  • Work gloves

  • Gutter scoop (or hand trowel)

  • Bucket

Process

The cleaning process is relatively simple. Move along the perimeter of your home with your ladder. Slowly remove the debris by hand and place into a bucket. Empty the bucket periodically before it gets too heavy to easily carry. Take special care to avoid extending your body when you are on the ladder. Over-extension creates a safety hazard.

Other Considerations

If you have never cleaned your gutters, you may have clogging issues with the drains. If this is the case, you I will need either a power washer or a plumbers snake, which will be used to expel any debris that is lodged in the drain.
